Dea Matrona ‘Every Night I Want You’ Single Review and UK and Irish Tour Dates

By Conor O’Neill

From their debut album For Your Sins, Belfast rock/pop duo Dea Matrona release their third single Every Night I want You. And this one is just a little different. Earlier singles from this LP: Black Rain and Stuck On You realises the duo’s rock credentials, hinting mainly of their devotion to Zeppelin and other harder rock influences. This one is pure, unadulterated pop music, with more than a nod to The Cranberries.

The pair even admit in the bio for the single that the release of Every Night I Want You that: “We wanted something different in between the darker stuff on the album.” And what they want is what they achieve.

A few well chosen bass notes and a shimmer of drums opens up to a beautiful voice, the guitar is clean, that jingle-jangle of an electric guitar not muddied by distortion or over-fluttered with effects: yes, there does seems to be just a tad of reverb on both vocals and guitar but they only enhance the vibe.

And that vibe is ‘summer’. Perfect timing considering the terrible March we’ve just had here in Northern Ireland. Every Night I Want You is like a flower opening up to the summer’s sun, and the thaw melting from bones after a tiring winter.

I’ve only listened once properly through the LP, but if Every Night I Want You was a phase, I’d have to state it’s their Summer Of Love style of song from an album heavily influenced by 1970s rock. The harmonies are saccharine, the lyrics simple and direct, the flow of the song whilst poppy is sultry, languid and gloriously sensuous. The bass-line sometimes sits on the roots and fifths, at other times it cuts through reminiscent of The Smith’s Andy Rourke as it stabs through the higher registers of the fret-board

All together the sum of the parts adds up to a shiny pearl of a summer song. I suggest you get listening now. Every Night I Want You is available now on the usual digital platforms.

For those of you wishing to see more of the band they will be performing at Belfast’s HMV music store on May 3rd, the release date of the album.
